So is it worth getting the 2018 model yet? Nope. Over the last three years, all OLED TVs I've tested offer very similar image quality. Yes the newest ones are the best TVs ever, but last year's versions are a very close second. Here's how I summed it up in my review of the 2018 C8.

As of April 2018, the LG C8 is the best TV I've ever tested, beating the 2017 Sony and LG OLED TVs by a hair. And it's a thin hair: The C8's main advantages are really minor, including slightly better screen uniformity and ephemeral new video processing options. The 2017 and 2018 models all deserve a picture quality score of "10".

The best TCL TV we've tested is the TCL 6 Series/R655 2022 QLED. It's an impressive TV with superb reflection handling and high peak brightness, so it can easily overcome glare in a bright room. It also has fantastic contrast and a decent full array local dimming feature, which is great for watching movies in a dark room, as dark scenes look their best. It's available in a wide range of sizes, from a standard 55-inch model up to a massive 85-inch screen.

If you want something a bit cheaper than the TCL 6 Series/R655 2022 QLED, then the best mid-range TCL TV we've tested is the TCL 5 Series/S555 2022 QLED. It's a great TV overall that delivers similar picture quality to the more expensive 6 Series, but it's not as well-equipped for gamers. It's about as good as the 6 Series for watching movies in the dark, thanks to its superb contrast ratio and fantastic black uniformity. However, its local dimming feature isn't quite as effective at making bright highlights stand out.

TCL's 4 Series lineup is a budget-friendly lineup whose TVs don't cost much. Like the 6 Series and 5 Series models, TCL has released them in the past few years with different smart platforms. The TCL 4 Series/S446 2021 is the current Google TV available, while the TCL 4 Series/S455 2022 is the latest Roku model and performs better than the S446, making it the best TCL TV you can get on a budget. The Roku platform is great, with an easy-to-use interface, and there are a ton of apps you can download through the app store. The remote doesn't have a mic built-in, but you can use the Roku app on your phone for voice control.

One of the best features of the Roku platform is its remote app you can find on both iOS and Android. It can do everything the smart remote can and more, so it's fully featured. All the basic remote controls are available, even powering the TV on and off. You can plug in headphones to your device and listen to the TV privately through the app. Lastly, the app also allows you to access settings that aren't available on the TV, like the calibration settings. Roku is better than Google TV in this regard, mainly because you can do everything you need with the remote with Google TVs.

TCL's lineup is mostly budget-oriented, and they do very well in that area. Their smart platforms rival the very best, and they offer different smart platforms, which isn't something other brands do. Plus, their picture quality has been consistently good across their models. Overall, it's tough to beat them when it comes to budget TVs, and that makes them a pretty safe bet, but if you want a premium TV, you can find options with other brands.

Great wide color gamut, one of the best of 2017, and only a little worse than the Samsung QLEDs like the Q7. Saturated colors in HDR content will be well represented. The TV's accuracy with the colors within its gamut could be better, as almost all points artificially undershoot their targets and saturated cyan turns green.The EOTF in the technicolor picture mode (with Active HDR on) follows the target PQ curve almost perfectly until it clips at its peak brightness. The EOTFs in Game and PC modes have similarly great accuracy. Raising the 'Dynamic Contrast' setting above 'Low' will make the EOTF brighter, which may be useful when watching HDR in a bright room.

There's a lot to love about the LG 55-inch C7 OLED. The OLED display looks superb, with great color quality, pristine black levels and excellent all-around performance. The sound quality is better than average, the smart TV features rank among the best and the design is simply beautiful. If you couldn't already tell, we recommend it to pretty much anyone looking to buy a premium 4K TV, especially those in the market for an OLED display.

At the original retail price of $2,999, this would have been an easy recommendation, based entirely on the rich feature set, excellent design and superb picture quality. It was a good buy then, but now it's a steal. The recent price drops have made the LG C7 OLED one of the best TV values to be found, and it gets a strong recommendation from us. This is an excellent premium OLED TV selling at midrange prices, and it will remain one of the best buys around until the new 2018 models come out.

When it comes to motion performance, handling of 50Hz interlaced video (for example, the type of video used for Freeview or Freesat broadcasts) is still found wanting on the LG 55C7, and we noted rare but reproducible interlace artefacts such as combing in fast-action sports. For the best experience, it's worthwhile sending a progressive video signal to the TV wherever possible.

Other attractions include four HDMI 2.1 sockets that support 4K@120Hz, VRR and ALLM, plus an HGIG setting that can help you get the most accurate contrast from HDR games. In other words, the C1 is not only one of the best OLED TVs, it's one of the best gaming TVs we've tested.
