Smithsonian Museum Project

Visitors to the museum can expect to leave more informed and inspired to effect change in their own communities. At ACM, we seek to learn, examine, and interrogate the social, economic, and environmental issues confronting the D.C. region; to share all aspects of a vibrant local history; and to celebrate local creativity. We do this with and alongside others and through immersive and thought-provoking experiences, inclusive of multiple perspectives. We inspire people to see that change is possible in the face of adverse circumstances, by telling the stories of those who have lived and achieved it. By connecting the past to the present, our work seeks to engage more of us to act and influence the world around us.

In her artwork, Black attempts to create a dialogue around social and political issues, especially through an exploration of the body and the land as contested sites of historical and cultural knowledge. The REDress Project positions the indigenous female body as a target of colonial violence while reclaiming space for an indigenous female presence. The dresses, collected through community donation, have been installed at several Canadian galleries, museums, and universities since 2011.

River of Resilience: A Journey from Headwaters to Confluence on the Anacostia River, River of Resilience is a nine-chapter web story structured as a journey from the headwaters of the Anacostia in Sandy Spring, Maryland, to the confluence of the river with the Potomac in Washington DC. This project offers a visually-rich geographic narrative of a wounded but irrepressible watershed, a story of those who are working to heal this river community, and an entreaty to join them. The project features the writing and photography of Krista Schlyer, a senior fellow in the International League of Conservation Photographers, and author of the book River of Redemption: Almanac of Life on the Anacostia, due out fall 2018 from Texas A&M University Press.

Thank you so much for your interest in our project! We truly appreciate it. The response has exceeded all of our expectations. Our team has decided to stop accepting new entries so that we can review and sort the many submissions we've already received.

Please know that while we may not be able to respond directly to every message, each one is contributing to our ongoing research on how visitors use, experience, and enjoy the Disney parks. Stay tuned for future announcements about the project.

The Smithsonian estimates the total cost of the building revitalization will be $650 million, funded through Congressional appropriations. In addition, the museum will raise the $250 million it needs for new exhibitions through private sources.

Biological collections with the Curasub off Curaçao have resulted in the discovery of numerous new and rare species of fishes, marine mollusks, echinoderms and crustaceans. This project utilizes the taxonomic expertise of more than a dozen Smithsonian scientists and employs modern molecular tools and digital photography and videography to fully document species and genetic diversity on deep reefs.

One of the recent mass digitization projects of the Digitization Program Office (DPO) had a particular challenge because we needed to keep track of scientific names. The project was the digitization of more than thirty thousand specimens of bumblebees (genus Bombus) and carpenter bees (genus Xylocopa) from the Entomology Department of the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH).

In the first semester of the MS Data Viz program, students always collaborate with an external data partner in order to explore real-world visualization projects, which in the past has meant partnerships with the UN Poverty Lab and The Met Museum. Recently, the Smithsonian Institute launched their Open Access initiative, releasing 2.8 million images, metadata, and research data sets into the public domain, which made them an ideal partner for the Data Viz program.

Collaborating with a world-renowned institution like the Smithsonian Institute also allowed the students in the program to rethink the ways people can experience a museum during the current coronavirus pandemic. Students were also able to explore ideas that they might not otherwise have had access to, and were able to do so with relative ease while studying and working from home.
